What Ujamaa Actually Means

Ujamaa is a Swahili word for 'familyhood' or 'extended family,' and it became the philosophical core of Julius Nyerere's vision for Tanzania after independence. Beyond that political moment, ujamaa names a much older intuition: that economics is not separate from kinship, and that pooling resources within a circle of obligation is not naive but rational.
